Gozan-Okuribi Festival


Aug 16th,the most popular event on hot summer night in Kyoto Bonfires are lit to light the way for the souls to go back to their world after the yearly visit to this world.

The festival starts at 8:00 p.m., when fires are lit on Mt. Nyoigatake to form the Chinese character dai, meaning "large". After this, more fires are lit separately on each mountain to form different patterns.

Nagoshi no Shinji


6th August from 18:30 ~
There will be a Nagoshi no Shinji ceremony at Shimogamo Shrine.

A Shinto ceremony to pray for health.
Young men jump into a small pond to compete to get sacred sticks set up in the ponds.
